The Otto Schott Institute of Materials Research is a cross-faculty institute of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy and the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Our research focuses on the correlation between structure and properties of different classes of materials as a function of their synthesis and application conditions, with a special emphasis on glass. The knowledge gained in this way is used in the design of new materials and the manufacture of tailor-made components and products using new methods of material characterization.

Research topics include:

  • Glass and glass ceramics
  • Ceramic materials
  • Metals and Alloys
  • Polymers and composites
  • Nanostructured materials and surfaces
  • Materials for optics
  • Biomaterials
  • Materials for energy and environmental technology
  • Material processing with lasers
  • Modelling and simulations

"Materials are ubiquitous. We wear clothes made of breathable fabrics, our cars and bicycles are graceful metal constructions, we live in houses made of ceramic bricks, and our eyeglass lenses are made of glass or plastic. Our entire lives are shaped by natural or specially developed materials. In the study of materials science at the University of Jena, students deal with the selection, development and processing of materials to drive technical and scientific progress in traditional and promising industries."
